RSS Overview
What is RSS?
Depending on who is asked, RSS stands for "Real Simple Syndication" or "Rich Site Summary" and is simply a method for publishing
content. Generally RSS is used to publish regular updates to Web sites via subscription
model. When someone subscribes to an RSS feed, they are notified of updates to
the Web site by using an RSS reader. This saves the end-user both time and bandwidth.
Instead of visiting a Web site to check on new content, an RSS reader will notify
the end-user when new content is available. Thus RSS is simply a method to stay
current with Web site updates, such as news articles, blog postings or new podcasts.
What do I need to use rSS?
Anybody who wants to receive updates through RSS will need an RSS reader.
There are many excellent RSS readers available for download on the internet.
Some RSS readers are implemented as a plug-in for web browsers and some are stand-alone
applications. Using either application, in order to subscribe to an RSS feed,
one must first click on the RSS button. Web broswer plug-in's generally detect
the RSS feed after it is clicked, resulting in automatic subscription. For stand-alone
players, first click on the RSS button and then copy the URL from the browser
into the application itself. Additionally, some RSS readers are web services
that provide RSS via a Web site.
