| Azy, (AY-zee) a male orangutan, was born at Smithsonian’s National
Zoological Park in 1977 and lived briefly at the Albuquerque Zoo. He returned
to the National Zoo in 1980. In 1995, Azy began living at the Think Tank and
participating in the Orangutan Language Project with Dr. Rob Shumaker. Azy arrived
at Great Ape Trust of Iowa on September 28, 2004.
Azy weighs about 270 pounds and has an arm span of over eight feet. He is
very receptive to learning new language skills and enjoys working with Dr. Shumaker
as they continue their research together. Inquisitive, gentle and even rather
shy, Azy has settled in very well to his new home in Iowa. |
