| Knobi, (kah-NOH-bee), a female orangutan, was born on September 30, 1979
at Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha, Nebraska. She moved to Great Ape Trust of Iowa
on February 8, 2005. Knobi was a bit apprehensive when we first introduced her
to Azy. She now has a very positive relationship with him and they are often
found together. In the future, Knobi will join Azy as a participant in the Orangutan
Language Project. For now, she continues to settle in and relax in her new home.
Knobi weights about 135 pounds and is a very active individual. She spends
much of her day exploring her habitat here at Great Ape Trust while enjoying
some of the many objects we provide for her to play with. These include beach
toys such as small buckets and shovels. Knobi greatly enjoys digging in the sand
to fill up her bucket! She also particularly enjoys climbing and swinging on
our “vines”, which are actually donated fire hoses from Iowa fire
departments. With her sweet, playful disposition and her active mind, the signs
are auspicious for Knobi’s participation in language research at Great
Ape Trust of Iowa.
